Third Age Consulting Services for Lifespan Transitions

Third Age Inc. was established to provide technical assistance and consulting services to individuals, families, local agencies, regional, state, and national organizations and associations in the areas of aging and developmental disabilities. The goals of Third Age are to assist the increasing aging population with developmental disabilities and older individuals with disabilities to--have a voice in choosing the supports needed in the later life years and to be able to express " I want, I need, I like, or I don't want, I don’t need, or I don't like..." to family members, care givers, direct staff; and all others who are involved in the lives of these individuals.

As each of us are different in our likes and dislikes and we have different expectations based on our life experiences, so does the older population with developmental disabilities. One only has to listen to what an older person has to say to understand what is important to them as individuals.

There are many new options and choices awaiting the emerging aging population with developmental disabilities that offer the chance to determine what is needed or what is enjoyable. The community offers new experiences that may provide the one thing that encourages growth and new interests. For the aging population facing new challenges, there are many resources that may provide the necessary supports to remain active and involved in their personal lives and not have to relocate to different environments.

Third Age, Inc. has contracts for services in Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas.

Assistance for Families

It was in the 1980's when the phrase "sandwich generation" was first heard. The sandwich generation is defined as families who have children living at home and parents who need assistance. Now in the 1990's, many working families have neither the time or the skills to seek out assistance for parents and aging relatives who are experiencing a decline in physical or mental skills and abilities. Many times just trying to help parents or other family members due to distance, time demands, or getting lost in the maze of agencies and systems requirements may create unnecessary stress and strain that could impact job and work productivity and family relationships.
