Reports

The IASSID/AAMR Working Group on Alzheimer Dementia and Intellectual Disability has issued three reports.

#1-Practice Guidelines for the Clinical Assessment and Care Management of Alzheimer and other Dementias among Adults with Mental Retardation (Authors: Janicki, M.P., Heller, T., Seltzer, G.B., & Hogg, J.)
Abstract: This report covers the practice guidelines, developed by an international committee, provide information on the identification of Alzheimer and other dementias among adults with mental retardation. The committee provided guidance for stage-related care management of Alzheimer disease and suggestions for training and education of carers, peers, clinicians and program staff. A short version of the practice guidelines is in the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 1996, 40, 374-382.

#2 -Diagnosis of Dementia in Individuals with Intellectual Disability (Authors: Aylward, E.H., Burt, D.B., Thorpe, L.U., Lai, F. & Dalton, A.J.)
Abstract: This report proposes a set of standardized criteria for the diagnosis of dementia in individuals with intellectual disability and a standardized procedure for determining whether or not criteria are met in individual cases. It is the authors' intention that these criteria be appropriate for use by both clinicians and researchers. The need for standardized criteria and diagnostic procedures was identified by a group of clinicians and researchers attending the International Colloquium on Alzheimer Disease and Mental Retardation, as one of the foremost impediments to progress in the understanding and treatment of this condition. The diagnostic criteria and procedures outlined in this report are endorsed by those who attended the International Colloquium. A short version of the diagnostic report is in the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 1997, 41, 152-164.

#3 - Epidemiology of Alzheimer Disease in Mental Retardation: Results and Recommendations from an International Conference. (Authors: W. Zigman, N. Schupf, M. Haveman, & W. Silverman)
Abstract: This report considers the discussions and recommendations of an epidemiology workgroup, formed at an international conference convened to discuss Alzheimer disease among people with mental retardation, concerning: (a) the incidence and prevalence of clinical dementia in adults with mental retardation; (b) risk factors for the development of Alzheimer disease in adults with mental retardation; and (c) a minimum data set that would be of great utility for future research on Alzheimer disease in adults with mental retardation. A short version of the epidemiological article is in the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 1996, 40, 76-80.
